UPI is the largest payment rail on earth, and the QR is the front door
India processed 17.4 billion UPI transactions worth ₹24 lakh crore in March 2026 alone (NPCI). That is more than every other real-time payments network in the world combined. The single design choice that made it work is the QR: one printed sticker, every app reads the same standard, every customer pays in two taps.
This guide walks through what a UPI QR is, how to make one for your shop or invoice in 30 seconds, how to print and place it for maximum scan rate, the security risks to know about, and the edge cases (international tourists, multi-outlet chains, fixed-amount invoices) that most generators ignore.
How a UPI QR actually works under the hood
The QR encodes a standard URI defined by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The format looks like:
upi://pay?pa=name@bank&pn=Receiver+Name&am=100.00&cu=INR&tn=NoteFive fields matter. pa is your UPI ID (the VPA). pn is the payee display name shown to the payer. am is the amount, optional. cu is the currency, always INR. tn is a transaction note shown in the payer's app. Every Indian UPI app, by NPCI mandate, must recognise this URI and open the payment screen pre-filled.
The QR itself is just an encoding of that URI. The same QR works in PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, Cred, Amazon Pay, WhatsApp Pay, and every bank app from HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, Kotak, IDFC First, IndusInd, Yes Bank, RBL, and the cooperative banks. No app-specific QR exists. If anyone tries to sell you "PhonePe-only QR" or "Google Pay-only QR", they are misinformed; the format is identical.
How to make a UPI QR in 30 seconds
- Open the QRSprint UPI generator. No signup, no email.
- Type your UPI ID. Common formats:
name@okhdfcbank,name@ybl,name@paytm,9876543210@upi. Get yours from any UPI app: open it, tap your profile, copy the VPA. - Set the payee name. This is what the payer sees as "Paying to: ___" in their app. Use your shop name, not your personal name, if it is for a business.
- Optional, fix the amount. Leave blank for open-amount (customer types it). Lock to a specific value for invoices, fixed menu items, event tickets, parking fees.
- Pick PNG or SVG. PNG for screens and stickers under 10 cm. SVG for posters and signboards at any size, since it stays crisp.
Where to print and place the UPI QR for maximum scan rate
Print size matters more than you think. Indian phone cameras (especially older Android in tier-2 and tier-3 cities) need a minimum of 3 cm × 3 cm to lock the QR cleanly. For counter standees scanned at arm's length, 8 to 10 cm is the sweet spot. For shop signboards meant to be scanned from a metre or two away, go to 15 cm.
Place the QR at hand height, not eye height, and away from reflective glass. Direct sunlight glare kills scan rates on glossy paper, so use matte lamination if the QR sits near a shop window. For two-wheeler dealers and parking lots, a tamper-evident sticker (the kind that leaves a void pattern when peeled) prevents quishing, the QR-overlay scam where a fraudster sticks their own QR over yours and intercepts your customers' payments.
Quishing is real: how to protect your UPI QR from scams
Microsoft's Q1 2026 security report flagged QR-code phishing (quishing) up 146% year on year. In India the most common variant is physical: a scammer prints their own UPI QR sticker and overlays it on top of yours at a busy shop. Customers pay them, you lose the income, and you only notice when the bank statement doesn't match.
Three defences that work:
- Laminate or place under glass. A stuck-on sticker is trivial to peel. Laminated or framed QRs need a knife to remove.
- Tamper-evident vinyl. The cheap kind from Amazon (₹200 for 50 stickers) leaves a chequerboard "VOID" pattern if anyone peels them. Scammers learn fast and skip these.
- Customer-side verification.Train counter staff to glance at the payer's screen and confirm the payee name. If a customer says "paying ___" and it isn't your shop name, abort.
UPI QR for international tourists, the 2024+ reality
Since 2024, NPCI opened UPI to non-resident accounts in 10 countries: Singapore (PayNow link), UAE (Mashreq Neo Pay), Mauritius (NamasteNPCI), Nepal, Bhutan, France (Lyra Network), Sri Lanka, Oman, Qatar, and the United States (limited rollout via partnered banks). Tourists from those countries with a partnered foreign bank can pay your UPI QR using their home-currency wallet, with the conversion handled by NPCI.
Pure foreign card holders (Visa, Mastercard from non-partnered countries) cannot pay UPI QRs. If your business serves tourists, place a separate card-payment terminal next to the UPI QR for the gap.
Bulk UPI QRs for chains, franchises, and multi-outlet retail
Single shop, single QR is fine. Forty branches need a faster workflow. Our Bulk QR tool takes a CSV with three columns (type, value, name) and produces a ZIP with one QR per row, named by the outlet label. Use case: a dosa chain with 40 outlets across Bangalore and Chennai generates 40 UPI QRs (one per outlet's settlement account) in one upload, then ships printed standees to each location.
UPI QR vs other Indian payment QRs (BharatQR, GST QR, FASTag QR)
India has a few QR formats that look the same to a customer but encode different things.
- UPI QR, what this guide covers. Encodes
upi://pay?.... Works in every UPI app. - BharatQR, older interoperable QR from RBI, supports both UPI and card networks. Mostly seen at large retailers from the 2017–2020 era. Largely superseded by pure UPI QR today.
- GST e-invoice QR, mandatory on B2B invoices above the GST threshold. Encodes a JSON payload with invoice metadata signed by the IRP (Invoice Registration Portal). Not a payment QR; it's a verification artefact for tax officials. See our GST QR guide.
- FASTag QR, encodes the FASTag account ID for toll booths. Not for retail payment.
UPI QR for specific Indian businesses
Restaurants: One QR at each table for bill payment, one at the counter for takeaway. Set the amount on the table QR only after the bill is calculated (most POS systems generate a per-bill QR with the amount baked in). For a standalone tea or chaat stall, an open-amount QR at the counter is enough.
Kirana shops: Open-amount UPI QR at hand height. Print the GST number on the sticker if you are GST-registered, so customers can claim input tax credit on business purchases.
Auto-rickshaws and taxis: Stickers on the dashboard with a clear "Pay by UPI" header. ₹15 to ₹500 trips, open-amount works best because the meter is variable.
Event organisers: One fixed-amount QR per ticket tier. Customers pay, take a screenshot of the success page, show at the gate. For high-volume events use a payment aggregator with per-payment tracking instead.
Home services (plumbers, electricians, packers): UPI QR on the back of a printed visiting card. Customer pays after service. Pair with a phone-call QR on the front of the card for first contact.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Wrong UPI ID format.
name@okhdfcbankis right.name@hdfc(without theokhprefix) is wrong for HDFC. - Missing payee name. The
pnfield shows up in the payer's app. Without it, they see "Paying to:" with a blank, which is unprofessional and feels like a scam. - QR too small.Under 3 cm fails on older Android cameras. Always test the printed sticker by scanning from arm's length before committing to bulk print.
- Using a low-contrast colour scheme. Black QR on white background scans best. Coloured QRs (your brand colour, your shop colour) need very high contrast (dark colour on light background, never the reverse) and reduce scan reliability by 10 to 20% on phone cameras.
- Forgetting to test the live QR. Generate, download, print one copy, scan with all three of PhonePe, Google Pay, and your bank app to confirm the payee name and amount match. Then bulk print.
Frequently asked questions
The FAQPage JSON-LD above renders these directly in Google search results, so we include the long-form answers here too.
Does this UPI QR work with PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM, and Cred?
Yes. The QR encodes the standard NPCI UPI Intent URI. Every UPI app reads it.
Do I need a merchant account?
No. Any UPI ID works. For high volume, switch to a P2M (person-to-merchant) UPI ID from your bank, which has no daily limit.
Can I set a fixed amount on the QR?
Yes. Useful for invoices and fixed-price items. Leave blank for open-amount.
Is there a transaction fee?
For person-to-merchant payments under ₹2,000 to small merchants, MDR is 0% by RBI mandate. Person-to-person UPI is zero fee on every transaction.
Will the QR expire?
No. Static UPI QR works as long as your UPI ID is active at the bank.
